A great number of workers in the UK do not have adequate protection if they fall seriously ill, according to Unum .
Research conducted by the income protection provider found that 90 per cent of employees do not have adequate income protection insurance if they have to take long term sick leave, even though many wrongly believe they are eligible for sufficient money either from their employer or the state.
Employers in fact are only legally obliged to supply four weeks worth of salary should an employee require long term sick leave and the state will only pay a total of £5000 a year to those who find themselves in such a situation.
Unum is launching a nationwide campaign to make people aware of the financial difficulties they could face should an employee be forced into long term sick leave. Income protection policies can cover up to 80 per cent of an employees' salary with benefits starting after a predetermined period. Payments can be made up to retirement age or for a set number of years.
