Drewberry Insurance has issued a list of high-risk jobs for which insurers in the UK will often refuse income protection cover outright.
For people in most jobs, income protection can be taken out to cover monthly earnings in the event of time having to be taken off work due to illness or injury . However, income insurers compose a list of occupations they believe to be too risky to cover under any circumstances and these include those in the armed forces, pilots, fishermen, police officers, security guards, delivery drivers, miners, cleaners, construction workers and professional sports persons.
According to the The Labour Force Survey (LFS), 152 people were actually killed while at work in 2009/10, which highlights the need for caution when granting cover.
Tom Conner, head of protection at Drewberry Insurance, said: "Whilst it can be difficult gaining long-term cover for some occupations not all insurers have the same exclusions or restrictions, so if cover is declined with one insurer it doesn't mean that all insurers will have the same view."
