Individuals are being offered healthy incentives to sign up to income protection (IP) policies that will provide a financial safety net in the event of illness or disability .
A growing number of income protection providers have recently started to offer free health assessments and other promotions to boost sales of the cover. IP policies will pay out part of a person's monthly income, tax-free, until that person either returns to his or her own job, takes other paid work, or reaches retirement .
Customers who take out IP with healthcare group Bupa by October 17 will receive a free health assessment, normally priced at £149. Similarly, the insurer Aviva is giving new IP policyholders access to 24-hour doctor and stress counselling helplines. LV=, another provider, is giving free online health assessments and discounts of 15 per cent on physical health checks and Unum is offering new customers free counselling sessions.
