Bupa Individual Protection is expanding its critical illness cover to include additional conditions such as severe Crohns disease and benign spinal cord tumour.
The insurer claims it will be the only critical illness provider to support people waiting for an operation on the NHS by paying 25 per cent of a claimant's benefit or £25,000 (whichever is lower) directly into their bank account if they are awaiting aorta graft surgery, coronary artery by-pass grafts, heart valve replacement or repair or open heart surgery .
Bupa critical illness policies cover 23 standard conditions recommended by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), with 11 meeting ABI+ levels.
Steve Casey, product manager at Bupa Individual Protection, said: "The new critical illness cover really stretches the envelope in terms of meaningful coverage. We look at what we think our members would be looking for in terms of a product from us and part of that is looking at our declined claims. The changes would cost about two per cent in addition to existing premiums but we are swallowing the cost ourselves."
