Two thirds of small businesses are of the opinion that the death of a key employee would severely have an effect on their business, however few have key employee insurance, says Scottish Provident .
According to research conducted by the firm, 65 per cent of small businesses fear a key employee dying, but only 18 per cent have cover in place. Further, more than half (57 per cent) believe that their business would be significantly affected if a key employee was unable to work for more than six months as a result of a serious illness .
Jerry Bayman, national corporate sales manager at Scottish Provident, said: "The statistics are frightening. In a business with four key male employees, there is a 29 per cent chance one will die before retirement and a 68 per cent chance that one will have a critical illness . However, worryingly, over half (52 per cent) say they don't know what the probability is that one of their key employees will suffer an illness meaning they will be off work for six months or more."
