Over half of UK families are not properly protected
Wed, 23 Jun 2010
Almost 56 per cent of the UK's 5m families do not have adequate protection, according to research conducted by Aviva .

The life insurer is urging IFAs to remind families of the need for protection as figures reveal that 700,000 babies are born in the UK each year, but over 36,000 people die leaving financial dependants.

The research comes on the first anniversary of Aviva's free life cover for new parents scheme. The offer was launched in July last year and provides £10,000 free life cover per parent, per child, up to the child's first birthday. To date, 29 per cent of IFAs have taken up this offer for their clients and the initiative has provided over £50m in free cover to new parents.

Colin Last, of Berkshire-based Tamar IFA, said: "I agree with Aviva that the birth of child is a good time to remind parents of the need to provide protection for their newborn. They will probably need family income benefit, rather than whole of life cover ."
