Income protection could be more useful than life insurance
Fri, 23 Jul 2010
There has been a dramatic fall in the the death rates for heart disease and major cancers in recent years, however unhealthy habits are a danger to the nation's health, according to figures published recently in the Office for National Statistics' Social Trends survey.

The statistics add to the argument that protection products such as income protection and critical illness insurance could prove more useful than life insurance, given the high level of life expectancy in the UK.

Death rates for circulatory disease (including heart disease) have fallen dramatically, by two thirds between 1971 and 2008. Death rates for cancer in 2008 were at their lowest levels among men since 1971, falling 22 per cent overall. Males born in 2008 can expect to live 77.7 years, compared to 81.9 years for females.

Despite improvements in nutrition and the advances in medical science and technology, lifestyle choices threaten public health in the UK. A number of insurers are developing new approaches to underwriting to take the associated risk factors into account. In 2008 there were 9,031 alcohol-related deaths, which is more than double the number in 1991.
