Aviva to add own occupation definition to medical profession
Thu, 11 Feb 2010
Aviva has said that in reviewing its medical underwriting approach for medical professionals, it will now offer an "own occupation" definition for surgeons who perform surgical procedures and operations. Previously "the suited definition" was offered.

Kevin Murdoch, Senior Proposition Development Manager, Aviva UK Health said: "Aviva is committed to ensuring that Income Protection Solutions remains highly competitive and while own occupation terms have been offered to dental surgeons for some time, we are seeing an increased interest from intermediaries to offer other surgeons the option to protect their income based on their ability to perform their own role."

This move follows Aviva's recent announcement that they are introducing an innovative discount for customers with an exclusion (including partial) for mental health and/or spinal conditions. Aviva customers taking out an Income Protection Solutions policy also receive temporary accident cover, which offers them up to 90 days' free accident cover whilst the policy is being underwritten.
