Record number of critical illness claims paid out in 2009
Thu, 22 Apr 2010
There were more critical illness claims paid out in 2009 than ever before, as the problem of non-disclosure looks to be abolished from the protection industry, according to a study from Investment Life and Pensions .

The research revealed that insurers paid out an average of 90.5 per cent of all critical illness claims last year, which is up from the figure of 88.4 per cent reported by LifeSearch in 2008.

In 2009 Legal and General was found to have paid out the highest proportion of claims totalling 93.6 per cent, followed by Axa and Bright Grey at 93 per cent.

Richard Eagling, editor of Investment Life and Pensions Moneyfacts, said: "With non-disclosure having long been a contentious issue within the critical illness industry, it appears the efforts of providers and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to tackle the problem are finally being rewarded. The improvement in the claims statistics can only serve to improve confidence in the critical illness proposition."
