Stipulations of critical insurance cover can be confusing
Thu, 15 Oct 2009
Aviva is urging consumers to examine the terms of their critical illness protection as the number of conditions covered does not always guarantee a more effective policy.

Michael Whyte, chief underwriter at the organisation, made his comments following the news that Aviva will be increasing the maximum sum insured on its critical illness cover to £2 million and extending the definitions of the afflictions covered.

Many companies are increasing the number of conditions that they insure against to make their policies seem more appealing however, according to Mr Whyte this is not the way to judge a good level of cover. He indicated that Aviva will not add conditions to a policy unless they are not included within other definitions, which he claimed will make this type of insurance simpler for customers.

Mr Whyte added: "The conditions covered must have a significant impact on a person's life even if rare and definitions must be able to be fulfilled under current medical practice."
