Free critical illness offer available from LV=

LV= will be providing free critical illness (CI) cover to anyone taking out income protection in the next three months.

Available under the LV= Flexible Protection Plan, the offer entitles new customers to a free lump sum payment equivalent to three times their monthly income protection (IP) benefit. LV= hopes the launch will encourage consumers to buy IP cover, which is always paid in instalments, but acknowledges that customers may benefit from a lump sum payment if they develop a serious illness .

Chris McFarlane, head of protection at LV= said: "Protecting your regular income should be at the heart of sound financial planning. Worryingly, there is a clear consumer misconception that CI cover will provide the protection they need if they are unable to work due to long term sickness or an accident ."

Mr McFarlane added that in many cases, there was a real need for a regular continuing income, rather than the lump sum payment provided by CI cover.
