The Post Office is hiking up the cost of critical insurance cover for workers who loose their jobs .
Following a huge surge in claims, thousands of people with Lifestyle Protection policies could be facing increases of 50 per cent. The purpose of the cover is to help pay bills a person loses their job or is unable to work due to accident or sickness . Due to the sharp rise in redundancies, pay-outs have escalated and the company has said that the rises will apply to existing customers as well as the new ones.
Policy holders will also be forced to wait longer before they can make a claim . At present, policyholders can make a claim up to £2,500 a month after they have been out of work for 30 days. This is being extended to 90 days to stop people who think they are about to lose their job signing up for the cover.
A Post Office spokesperson explained that customers already claiming would not be affected by the changes.
