The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has updated its consumer guide regarding private medical insurance (PMI) as new figures reveal that the policies have been taken out by a record number of people.
The guide aims to improve consumer knowledge of the benefits of the insurance, which is designed to cover treatment for curable, short-term illness or injury and assist them in making the right decisions when taking out a policy, says the ABI.
The ABI added that the number of people covered by PMI hit the six million mark for the first time in five years.
Nick Starling, the ABIs director of general insurance and health, says: "Its good news that the popularity of Private Medical Insurance continues to grow. Health insurance gives people access to the treatment they need, when they need it, offers greater privacy and better facilities, and reduces pressure on the NHS ."
He also said that PMI enables employees to return to work after illness or injury much more quickly than they would otherwise which is good for companies and the economy.
