Not all conditions are covered. Rules set by the Association of British Insurers were adopted by insurance companies in May 2003 that tightened the conditions under which policyholders could claim on critical illness insurance policies.
As a result, policies have failed to provide cover for conditions such as non-invasive skin cancers, less advanced cases of prostate cancer, tumours that have not invaded an organ or tissue, and lymphoma or Kaposi's sarcoma in the presence of HIV.
People suffering from heart attacks are also subject to stricter conditions.
For example, there must be evidence of typical chest pain, or changes in the electrocardiogram (ECG), for a claim to be successful. Cardiac conditions, such as angina, will not be covered.
