To find out more about the state benefits for which your dependants might qualify.
See the relevant leaflets published by the Benefits Agency, an agency of the Department of Social Security (DSS), which are available from your local Benefits Agency, many public libraries, some post offices, by post and from their web site.
To find out which insurance companies offer the best-value protection insurance, see specialist personal finance magazines. If you have a fax machine, you can get rates from the Money facts service. Having narrowed down your choice to a few companies, contact those companies direct (some may refer you to an independent adviser).
Ask them to send you literature about the policies you are interested in and to give you a quotation of how much you'll have to pay for the cover you want.
